Personal accounts of how the day went.

  1. I learned more about what we would be doing in later visits. We followed a guy named Billy around as he led a group of elementary schoolers. We were told that we would be able to lead a group next time. I'm looking forward to it.

  2. Today I was able to get a taste of the responsibilities of a tour guide. I followed a tour, given to a group of children, and learned the information I would need to be a tour guide. I feel comfortable with the idea of giving these tours, and think that the experience in group speaking will be a usefull in the future.

  3. Today I learned some important things about groundkeeping. Mostly I was shown how to prune roses. Once I learned some of the basics, I helped the heritage museum by trimming a lot of their flowers and roses. My technique really improved over time and the garden looked pretty good.

  4. Today we accompanied a tour through the Kellogg House. The tour guide Billy, taught and explained to us numerous facts and stories about the Kellogg residence. If all goes well, the museum will allow us to run the tours by ourselves the next time we visit. I am looking forward to hopefully running a tour next time we visit the OC Heritage Museum.

  5. Today at the Heritage Museum of Orange County, my service learning group and I went on a tour of the Kellogg House. We studied the rooms as a tour was being given to a group of 4th graders. When we visit next time, the sage students will give the tours. I have learned a lot about the Victorian era and helped control the children on the tour.

  7. Today, our service learning group accompanied our tour guide, Billy, who gave a group of young elementary school children a tour of the Kellogg House. While on this tour, I took mental notes of the specific things that Billy would talk about to the children for preparation of being a main guide during a tour. Also, I helped out the kids put on replicas of Victorian-era style clothing. It was exciting to watch the kids admire the culture of over a century ago. Today's trip was an exciting peek into the future of our Service Learning project, where we will become a much larger part of the tour-giving services.

  8. Today our visit to the Kellogg House consisted of learning what the responsabilities of the Kellogg House tour guides were. We followed an eccentric man named Billy as he gave a group of anxious little fourth graders around the grounds. We learned some of the quirky phrases and experiences (the ghost drawers, butter churning, and clothes washing)that they have to offer the kids. After what we saw today, I'm really excited to have a part in sharing the Kellogg House experience.

  9. Today, instead of touring, I worked on archiving. I wouldn't call the work exciting, but it was pretty fun to be in a tiny, dusty, one hundred year old room looking at tiny, dusty, one hundred year old pictures and books. I think that working in archiving will give me an even better sense of the old Kellogg family and their history than the tour would.

  10. Today Brittany gave Chloe and I an orientation about archiving. The archive room itself, is nothing like the rest of the Kellogg; there is so much history packed into the tiny, cramped, dusty room. For the next few visits I will be working on recording the furniture in the Kellogg house. I'm lukewarm about my job but it is peaceful. On the other hand, it is tedious as I have to measure all the furniture and write detailed descriptions about each. Oh well, no one said SL was going to be easy. Toodles!
